Washington has fallen! Legions of 'grays' -- dead soldiers reanimated on the battlefield and pressed back into service of the Southern Cause -- have pushed the lines as far north as the Ohio River. Lincoln has moved the government of the United States to New York City. He needs to stop the juggernaught of the Southern undead 'abominations' or the North will ultimately fall. But Allan Pinkerton, his head of security, has a plan... The Northern newspapers are heralding Braxton Wright as the Hero of Parkersburg, but the engineer who designed the Northern walking monitors -- Tall Guns -- knows the truth. He had acted more out of panic than heroism and is certain he has gotten his best best friend, physician Lawrence Hancock, killed in the cold waters of the Ohio as a result. What he would like is to be forgotten. But at Pinkerton's urging, Lincoln personally sends Braxton on a mission aboard Gen. Sherman's airship deep into Southern territory. He will find Hattie Lawton, the woman who is the North's most capable spy, and with her must stop the undead of the South from rising again!

Lincoln Wizard Dragons of the Confederacy Book 1 Volume 1 Tracy Hickman Dan Willis 9781614753377 Books

It's the civil war with dragons, zombies and steampunk technology. What's not to like? With a well-developed main character and a creative plot that moves forward at an ideal pace, Lincoln's Wizard delivers! I love the "what if" possibilities this novel explores and can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Lincoln Wizard Dragons of the Confederacy Book 1 Volume 1 Tracy Hickman Dan Willis 9781614753377 Books Reviews

I've noted in the past few reviews I've done that it's been a relief to be the 1000+ reviewer, because it takes the pressure off. Therefore, I was rather disappointed to see that only one review preceded mine. I was further put off by the fact that I could not recognize this book through the prior review. From comments made by others, they had some problems as well.
Here's the book as I see it
THis is an alternate history in which both steampunk and magic elements abound. The American Civil War, instead of ending in 1865, has dragged on without an end in view for another six years (10 total). Just as in our time line, the North has the advantage with mechanical things. That largely was a matter of war production in our timeline, but has manifested as war gadgets of some sophistication. For example, the battleship Monitor is no longer an iron clad sea vessel, it's a tall gun, which extends itself on three legs to a great height, and uses twin Gatlings and a cannon to wreak devastation on Confederate forces. The South, on the other hand, has access to scientifically-based reanimation techniques, restoring dead troops with a cocktail known as the Reagent, which must be re-administered every two weeks, or the life force decays. Those reanimated, known as Grays, are limited to the experience of the last few minutes of their lives, however, so that if they died in an all-out assault, that's the only tactic they can implement.
In the air, the North has sophisticated hydrogen dirigibles, propelled by steam engines. The South counters this with a small number of dragon cavalry, limited by the number of dragons made available to them by France. The dragons have near-invulnerable skin, but are limited in the number of flame attacks they can provide by the time it takes to refresh the volatile saliva they use.
Other delightful devices are hinted at, but only one appears as a major plot element the North had attempted to counter the use of the Grays by constructing single-purpose automatons, known as Toks. Problems with powering them, plus the limits of single-use devices, made these a dead-end. Or did it? Hmmm...
I greatly enjoyed the presence of actual historical figures. Alan Pinkerton is the wizard referred to in the title. In fact, he has no magical powers, but heavily relies on engineered products provided for him by the technicians. Sherman, instead of being an infantry general, commands the Air Force of the North. Stonewall Jackson is his Southern counterpart, commanding the dragon fighters, the Southern Knights. Hattie Lawton, center of Pinkerton's plot, is a real-life figure, and she actually was captured and imprisoned in Castle Thunder in Richmond.
This is one of the MAIN reasons I love reading books online. I come across a name or term I want to research, highlight it, right-click, and shazam! All Google is my servant!
Here are some unresolved historical issues, which may be addressed in following books in the series
1. How is Lincoln still in office after 10 years? This is not a deal-breaker; FDR was elected four times due to the crisis of WWII, but it MIGHT be more interesting if Lincoln suspended elections for the duration of the emergency. He had done other dastardly things, in order to preserve the Union, and he explicitly has that goal in this book.
2. How in the heck is the South still in the war after 10 years? Our (I'm from Georgia) economy was 100% based on agriculture, which is man-power intensive, a plot-point which is made repeatedly by the protagonist, engineer Captain Braxton Wright. By 1865, we couldn't even feed ourselves; one of the provisions at Appomattox was that Grant feed Lee's troops before they went home.
I LIKE these characters. I want Hattie to be nicer to Braxton, but I still like her. I like the people I'd have to include plot spoilers to discuss. I like the foreshadowing of who might be the spy. I like the tension between Lincoln's lieutenant's; it reflects accurately what I know about big league power games as well as what I've read (a lot) about the dynamics of Lincoln's cabinet. So, I like them, and I want to know more of their stories.
Buy the book, and ask for more!
Th story ended to soon. I will wait for the next book. This story was well developed and very enjoyable.

The Confederacy continues to win each battle due to its ability to reanimate fallen comrades and a special unit of Southern Knights riding dragons like intrepid and very confident Lieutenant Marcus Burnside. This Gray army cannot be stopped as it marches north; forcing Lincoln and the Union leaders to relocate to New York.

Lieutenant Braxton Wright designs an iron clad ship the Monitor that stealthily navigates waterways while also rises on a tripod to fire down on the slower enemy vessels. These Tall Guns bring hope to the despondent President and the Northern Army, and make Wright a hero he knows he does not deserve. With no time to grieve the death that he caused of his best friend Dr. Lawrence Hancock in Ohio, Wright promoted to captain, receives orders from Union Intelligence Chief Allan Pinkerton. With a chosen few including top espionage agent Hattie Lawton, the mission of the very reluctant warrior is to lead a top secret desperate gamut behind enemy lines to end the Dead Gray Army.

The first Dragons of the Confederacy steampunk is a fast-paced Civil War fantasy that starts at hyperspeed and accelerates without ever slowing down; yet also contains a diverse and three-dimensional prime cast. The wizard (Warlock) in Spite of Himself (by Christopher Stasheff) prefers pencil, eraser and paper to battles; Hattie appears to have quite a history and is very comfortable behind enemy lines; Hancock remains an enigma; while cocky Southern Knight Lieutenant Marcus Burnside is a swashbuckling dragon rider.

Good book, well written and engrossing. Worth the read keep 'em coming.
What if the Yankee's had steam and the Rebels had magic during the civil war. The characters are interesting. The writing is geared for teenagers. But just as the book gets rolling, you get smacked with continued next book. I took off a star for the book being too short.
